There are times when some of the big box stores can get a bad rap, but I have to tell you that the Lowe’s in York is the bomb. The folks are super friendly and helpful and you would be surprised the deals that are there if you ask. We started changing out light fixtures in our bathrooms to give it an inexpensive update. All my lights came from Lowe’s and they were actually lights that were on clearance. When we were shopping we actually asked about them and there were some in the back that were marked down and that is what we bought. We also recently got a great deal on cabinets for the garage that Tim wanted in order to build in more storage and work surface. The Lowe’s store was changing out the line of cabinets they were carrying and we got a killer deal on base cabinets and countertops. Here again, you just have to ask. We all probably know to ask about scratch and dent items on sale, but if you are out shopping and in need of particular items be sure to ask if they have anything discontinued or items they are changing out. Might be surprised the “quiet” deals you can find just for asking.

During the summer months there is nothing better in the evenings than a special treat of ice cream. In Rock Hill one of our favorite spots to take the family for a sweet treat is PW’s ice cream located on Herlong Avenue about 1/2 mile from Piedmont Medical Center. PW’s features homemade ice cream in a number of flavors, but they have many specialties that you don’t find in many places. My family in particular loves the Concrete which is a delicious concoction of ice cream with special items such as Oreo cookies, Butterfinger, Snickers, M&Ms and so forth mixed in. The ice creams are killer with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream scooped in at the end to keep in nice and thick. Their specialty sundaes feature a number of items sure to please any craving. Don’t forget their ice cream cakes which are to die for if you are looking for an extra special birthday cake or cake to celebrate a special occasion. Walmart - Love it or Hate It

I have to be truthful and admit that I love Target and try to do all I can to stay out of Wal-Mart or sentimentally...Wally World. Having said that though there is a new Wal-Mart SuperCenter that was built in Rock Hill out towards the Newport area. On a number of occasions I would find myself driving by refusing to switch my loyalty from Target so I would just keep driving. Finally after hearing rave reviews about the new store I couldn't stay away any longer. As much as I can't believe I am saying this I really liked this store (having a hard time with love and Wal-Mart in the same sentence). The new store concept is more upscale feeling with a more sleek appearing store, wide aisles and much better visual merchandising of product. I really found myself enjoying the experience of going from aisle to aisle and I can't count the number of friends I ran into during my shopping experience. The grocery area was tremendous and I do find I like the Wal-Mart grocery section better than the Target SuperCenters I have experienced. The one thing that remains true are the prices that Wal-Mart is able to offer on groceries, housewares, clothes and so much more. If you have not checked out this particular store I urge you to do so. This part of Rock Hill will greatly benefit from having this Wal-Mart and all the other stores and restaurants that it will anchor. Watch the growth because it is coming and not something we should try to avoid and fight because given the economy today it is wonderful to see growth and more job opportunities for people. Wal-Mart is working hard to change their image and in these newer stores the changes are evident and the shopping experience truly is a pleasure. The entire shopping area is very attractive and neighbors in the surrounding communities such as Miller Pond, Silver Lakes and Pennington Meadows should be thrilled to have such a great new neighbor.

For just $3 for a roundtrip we park at I485 and South Boulevard and take the lightrail if we are going to a Carolina Panthers game, a Charlotte Bobcats game, the Blumenthal Theater for a show or even to some of the many bars and restaurants in Uptown such as Cosmos, Whiskey River, Blue, Merts Soul Food and so many more. We prefer living in a small college town like Rock Hill so we feel we have the best of both worlds with all the NCAA Sports Winthrop University offers and also the unique shopping experiences, however we have the luxury of large city living if we prefer to head that way. Can't go wrong as long as you know about location, location, location.

Woodland United Methodist Church

When our clients move to our area there are many things they try to get connected with early on such as doctors, dentists, shopping, barbers, schools and churches. Several years ago we were attending a church with wonderful people yet we never felt we fit in. We started visiting churches in the area and after being invited by one of our neighbors to visit Woodland United Methodist Church we finally found where we belonged. Conveniently located on Cherry Road near Winthrop and Earthfare this church on the corner is one you have to visit if you are looking for a place of worship that offers so much for all ages. Woodland has a tremendous program for children, youth, college students, young adults, and seniors. Sunday School classes start at 9:30 am and church service at 10:30 am. During the week there are a number of serves for folks in the community to participate in such as choir, prayer serves and so much more. Many of our members serve on a number of missions opportunities locally, statewide and internationally. The church also has traditions that many in the community look forward to such as the annual Pumpkin Patch and Christmas Cookie Walk. The music program at Woodland continues to grow with choir, bell choir, youth ensemble, children's choir and so much more. Week after week Dr. Larry Parker teaches and inspires his congregation and you just can't get enough of his messages. Woodland also offers a Pre-school enrichment program that many in the community enroll their children. Woodland has been part of the community for years and with the outreach and reputation the church continues to grow. We had a great experience this weekend and it was a first for both of us. Friends from Fayetteville, NC were in town for a soccer tournament which was held at Manchester Meadows. Teams from many states arrived at Manchester Meadows for the tournament and we heard comment after comment about how tremendous the complex was and everyone was so impressed and complimentary. Manchester Meadows is conveniently located in Rock Hill close to the interstate and it is surrounded by shopping, restaurants and many other amenities. Points of interest for shopping included Target, Khol's, Hobby Lobby, Pier I, Books-A-Million, Ross, GameStop and TJ Maxx. With all the choices of food options any taste or craving can be satisfied. Within walking range of Manchester Meadows is Olive Garden, Taco Bell, Bob Evans, McAllisters, McDonalds and just a short drive from the field is Cracker Barrell, Long Horn, Ruby Tuesdays, O'Charleys and so much more. I could not wait to get home tonight and blog on one our new favs! If you have not checked out DJ's Soul Food Restaurant this is something you need to do this week. There are actually two locations with one being located on Cherry Road and the other one (which I paid homage to) is on Herlong Avenue across from Fatz Cafe. Talk about comfort food like momma use to make you have to experience it to believe it. The atmosphere is cozy and the wait staff and other employees were super nice and friendly. Our waitress was really sweet and we always like to get their recommendations. She said her favorites were the fried pork chops or chicken wings. Tim opted for the fried pork chops and even though we are both big eaters there was enough meat for two people. I had the veggies and there is no macaroni and cheese better in all of South Carolina than what you will get at DJ's. The green beans, cabbage and fried okra where yummy. The menu included fried chicken, liver and onions, stew beef, marinated chicken, burgers, hotdogs and an array of home cooked vegetables. Growth in Rock Hill

On the northwest side of Rock Hill we are starting to see some tremendous growth which is exciting news for everyone. In addition to great neighborhoods such as Pennington Meadows, Miller Pond and Silver Lakes there is a new shopping area which is sure to bring many of the conveniences that have been lacking in that area. A new Wal-Mart Super Center is just about ready to open and this new concept store will be a welcomed by many folks living on that side of Rock Hill. A new Dollar Tree store has just had its grand opening and there is much anticipation as to what other stores, restaurants and service venues will be joining this most desire-able area. Verizon has a store going in which should offer neighbors the opportunity to have store in close proximity verses having to drive over to the Cherry Road store or the store at Manchester. The location for this new shopping mecca will make it easy for folks to access and parking is plentiful. The Past and the Present

Over the last several days many folks in Rock Hill and the surrounding areas have been following the news about the fire at the old Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Plant which is affectionately referred to as the Bleachery. In the days when the Bleachery was running at full capacity about 5,000 people worked there so most folks at one point either worked at the Bleachery or knew someone who did. The Bleachery has been vacant for 10 years therefore when it caught fire on Friday it was really an end to an end. Much of Rock Hill revolved around the Bleachery, but now you have to appreciate and respect the past as Rock Hill embraces and prepares for the future. Rock Hill has become an area which continues to attract new businesses and industries and where textiles once was king the landscape of this community continues to become truly diversified. There are so many offerings for various industries and businesses in Rock Hill and as a result Rock Hill continues to become a melting pot community bringing folks from all over the US and other countries. It is always amazing to find out what brought folks to Rock Hill and even though the reasons are varied the one common comment we here from people is how much the love the area and the people and how glad they are to call Rock Hill home.
